The Fondazione Gramsci Emilia-Romagna Onlus is a cultural institute that promotes knowledge of contemporary history through activities of research, training, and preservation of heritage. It organizes events, conferences and seminars on political, philosophical, social and cultural issues. It has a public library and a historical archive that preserves paper, photographic, audiovisual and multimedia documents from twentieth-century Italy.
After a shared design process with the Fondazione Gramsci Emilia-Romagna, we implemented a digital archive that allows users to access the documents through various paths connected to trips, themes and people linked to Enrico Berlinguer’s activities.
The site includes an administrative backend that makes it possible to continue populating the archive with new research materials.
INMAGIK handled both the design and implementation of the site, starting from the definition of the information architecture and arriving at an interactive mockup on which the subsequent development was based. The implementation of the frontend and the administrative backend was carried out using our Django + React stack, with a frontend implementation optimized for search engine indexing.
The backend is based on an open-source stack that includes an SQL database, REST APIs for communication with the frontend, and a caching layer.
We used Python and PostgreSQL to implement the application's backend.
The frontend user interface was implemented using the Material Design UI framework, for both desktop and mobile devices.
We used JavaScript and React to implement the application frontend.
The UI reflects a minimal and brutalist style, with colours and shapes that convey a modern aesthetic while respecting the history of the documents featured on the site.
We created every component using Figma.
The result we achieved is a digital archive with a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic, focused on making the documents it contains both pleasant to view and easy to consult. Each document is linked to people who, in turn, through their detail pages, are connected to the documents contained within the archive.
The documents can be easily consulted and filtered using specific parameters, with the preview highlighting the file type and giving ample space to its visual component.
A section of the archive is entirely dedicated to a timeline, where both the documents contained on the site and the most significant socio-political events are grouped year by year.
Il sistema consente la gestione delle richieste di verificazione periodica e della programmazione degli interventi, per avere un quadro sempre aggiornato delle scadenze e degli interventi pianificati presso i clienti.
Each document contains, in addition to the viewable media, a set of information related to the associated people, the year, and the type, along with a description.
